Chapter 4
Grace Kelly loved cruising along the Côte d'Azur in her convertible. Her headscarves became just as famous as her Kelly bag.
The American actress Grace Kelly, who later became Princess Gracia Patricia of Monaco, inadvertently became a fashion icon with her creation of the “Kelly style.” Originally, she was only aiming to protect her hair from the wind. The way she wore her headscarf – crossing the ends under her chin and knotting them at the nape of her neck – became synonymous with her name. Similarly, the handbag she reportedly used to conceal her pregnancy also bears her name. Even today, lovers of the Kelly bag wait half an eternity to order one.
She filmed “To Catch a Thief” with Alfred Hitchcock.
Grace Kelly’s acting career began in the early 1950s. Her breakthrough came in 1952 with her role in the western “Twelve Noon” (original title: “High Noon”), where she starred alongside Gary Cooper.
In the following years, Kelly established herself as one of Hollywood’s leading actresses.
She became particularly well known through her collaboration with director Alfred Hitchcock. She played leading roles in his films “Dial M for Murder” (1954), “Rear Window” (1954), and “To Catch a Thief” (1955). She won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1955 for her performance in “A Country Girl” (1954).
The tragic end of a princess.
In 1955, Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier III of Monaco at the Cannes Film Festival. The two married on April 19, 1956, in a grand ceremony that was televised worldwide. After their wedding, Kelly retired from acting.
As Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly supported numerous charitable causes. Despite her glamorous lifestyle, Grace Kelly was admired for her down-to-earth attitude and social engagement. However, her life was not free of tragedy. On September 13, 1982, she suffered a stroke while driving and crashed her car near Monaco. She died the following day at the age of 52. Grace Kelly remains an iconic figure – both in film history and among European aristocracy. Her style, elegance, and philanthropic work continue to define her as an enduring legend.
