Readers Manual

Digital + analog = dialogue

The concept is straightforward: anything that doesn’t fit between the covers of a book can be downloaded to your smartphone instantly. This includes videos, photos, and additional content. The distinction between digital and analog is erased, fostering meaningful dialogue. Simply search for the “joinprints” in the book:

Here you can share your thoughts… or your selfies.

But let’s start from the beginning.

Whether you already own the book and prefer having the Reader’s Manual in digital format, or you’re just opening the book from the back and have scanned the QR code on the back flap:

This book is unlike any other.

It features two types of content. In black text on a white background, you’ll find a fictional story that feels true to life. In white text on a black background, you’ll encounter “prints” that accompany you throughout the book. These prints contain all the factual information and knowledge found in traditional non-fiction books, presented concisely and clearly.

You have the freedom to choose whether to pause the narrative or continue reading because it’s too compelling to put down. The prints are always available for you. You can easily identify different types of prints by their symbols:

FACT PRINTS provide you with up-to-date background information on the topic you are reading about.

FUTURE PRINTS present findings from futurology.

We briefly discussed JOIN PRINTS above – they are personal brain games. You decide whether you want to “play” them in your head or share them with others.

You’ll find a QR code for each JOIN PRINT.

SCORE PRINTS – found at the end of chapters 1 to 4 – reveal the interim results. These are selected learnings that can help save democracy.

ACTION PRINTS outline exemplary measures for implementation once the strategy for safeguarding democracy has been identified. These prints provide essential background information on measures already discussed in the story or in other prints.

QUOTE PRINTS are verbatim quotes.

Whenever you see a QR code, there’s more to discover.

You can also share ideas. Simply scan the QR code with your modern smartphone to access additional information, photos, and videos related to the page’s topic.

A glimpse behind the scenes of a management consultancy.

Between chapters, you will find out what happens in the weeks you are not reading about. These double pages are distinguished by white text on a black background, indicating they are not fictional. Here, you get a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations of a management consultancy, offering a view typically unseen by the public. To provide an authentic experience, I share insights directly from our own group of companies, firsthand.

At the bottom of each page, you can see the week in which the chapter you are currently reading takes place. At the top, in lower case letters, you can see the chapter number followed by its topic. There is a winning formula presented at the end of this book. “Winning Formula” might sound a bit over the top, but this book does contain it:

Five years of research across 39 countries worldwide,

including all 22 full democracies (of course, this wasn’t a one-man show, because I had the support of many collaborators, to whom I am deeply grateful!). In the story you’ll also encounter a character named Ben. You may wonder whether his similarities with the author are coincidental or intentional. In any case, it’s not important for the future of democracy.

This book is based on Preta research, a methodology that combines various methods to achieve particularly meaningful study results. Preta research also includes global indices, prominently featuring the democracy index (represented by the Statue of Liberty symbol), which serves as a benchmark against other indices. They passionately advocate for democracy.

Incidentally, the heroine of this book is named Agora. Agora is not only the birthplace of democracy, but also translates to “Now!”
