The US Consulate

Chapter 1

From consulate to hotel: Welcome to the Jefferson!

The former US consulate in Hamburg served as the headquarters of the National Socialists from 1934 to 1945. The Gauleiter and Reich Governor Karl Kaufmann, as detailed in the book, established the Gauleitung there. The two previous villas were merged into one during this period. After World War II, the building was confiscated by the British military government (Hamburg was in the British occupation zone). In May 1950, the American government acquired the property from heirs of the property’s original owners.

The current American Consulate General in Hamburg is located in Hafencity. It serves not only Hamburg but also Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Bremen, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which host approximately 20,000 US citizens combined.
